Loizos Symeou is Professor in Sociology of Education at the European University Cyprus. He is the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs of the university and head of the university’s Committee on Internal Quality Assurance. He studied at the University of Cyprus, the University of Sydney, Australia and the University of Cambridge, UK, from which he received his Ph.D. His doctoral studies were funded by the UK Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) Award Scheme. He served as Chairperson of the Department of Education Sciences European University Cyprus (2007-2012) and Dean of the School of Humanities, Social and Education Sciences (2014-2018). His areas of interest and publications are in the sociological investigation of school-family-child relationships and how these link to cultural and social capital theory. Recent work includes studies on homework, on the school experience of Roma children and families, and family involvement in higher education. His research activities have been funded by national, European and international organisations. He has published one monograph and more than 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters.
